MSA University - Faculty of Languages - Writing Center

 

 

Vision:

The Writing and Support Center at MSA provides a free writing tutoring service on campus for students to promote their success as university students.

The Writing and Support Center helps undergraduate students in all faculties and majors to enhance their academic writing, communication, and presentation skills in a friendly and stress-free environment.

The Writing and Support Center offers MSA students guidance on their assignments and academic tasks at all stages involved in the writing process: from brainstorming and prewriting techniques to writing skills, citation and proofreading strategies.

Mission:

The Writing and Support Center at MSA offers two main services:

 

- One-to-one consultations

 

The writing and support center provides one-to-one assistance to students on their writing and academic tasks as well as feedback and follow up tutorials. Tutors will help students improve their academic skills on a given task and provide tips and resources to students to become more confident and successful writers.

 

Tutors will primarily offer help in the following areas:

 

▪ Organizational skills: brain storming, outlining, and prewriting techniques

▪ Language skills: language structure and mechanics

▪ Study skills: paraphrasing, summarizing, quoting, synthesizing, and integration of sources

▪ Avoidance of plagiarism and maintaining academic honesty

▪ Communication and presentation skills

 

- Workshops

 

The Writing and Support Center offers both specialized and tailored workshops on varied topics to students in all disciplines. Sessions will be delivered by keynote speakers, and faculty members. The purpose of the workshops is to provide academic support to MSA students in any subject or field.

 

The following are examples of workshops topics which can be tailored and customized to assist students:

 

• Primary Research Techniques

• Writing a Literature Review

• Integration of Sources and Avoidance of Plagiarism

• Communication and Presentation skills

• General Translation Skills

• Creative and Literary Writing

• Technical/Business Writing Skills

Objectives:
  1.  Providing one-to-one support for all university students in all soft skills (this includes CV writing, Graduate research skills in different faculties, presentation skills) All year round Daily
  2.  Conducts workshops for skill development One workshop per semester
  3.  Provides one-to-one support for all students especially those with learning difficulties
  4.  Provides more hands-on exercises to students who are facing some problems in any of the academic English units
How to book a writing centre session:
  1. The student heads to the faculty of Languages Administration Office (A215).
  2. The student books a session that suits their schedule.
  3. The administration office arranges with an instructor and plans for the session.
  4. The student is contacted and directed to Room S202 (SSB building).

Why Study at the Faculty of Languages?

The Faculty of Languages, MSA University was established in the year 1999. The Faculty of Languages is set up with a view to meet the challenging demands dictated by the fast-changing job market of the 21st Century. The British partnership with the University of Bedfordshire, UK - signed in 2014 - aligns the educational services provided by the Faculty of Languages with the British international standards of higher education. The Faculty of Languages is the first of its kind in Egypt that provides its graduates with a dual degree: a British degree awarded by the University of Bedfordshire, UK and an Egyptian degree accredited by the Supreme Council of Higher Education in Egypt that is equivalent to the certificate awarded by the Faculties of Alsun. The dual degree is offered through a wide array of interdisciplinary programmes that combine English Language Studies with other disciplines addressing the needs of the job market and pursuing the latest trends in the field of higher education.

 

Working closely with the students, the Faculty of Languages focuses on developing creative abilities, critical thinking skills, cultural awareness and lifelong autonomous learning. It further fosters interactive learning processes, extra-curricular activities, internship programmes and research work to equip graduates with necessary skills that enable them to perform exceptionally well with focus and confidence in national and international job markets.

 

Pathways

The Faculty of Languages offers Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in four separate programmes/ pathways. These programmes provide students with life-long skills that employers are seeking and give graduates a competitive edge in the employment market.

  • English Language Studies (Translation)
  • English Language Studies (Executive Skills) (Human Resources, Management & Business Administration Skills).
  • English Language Studies (Teaching English as a Foreign Language -TEFL).
  • English Language Studies (Comparative Studies) (Literature, Cinema and Theatre)

 

Second Foreign Languages

Students of the Faculty of Languages choose one of the following languages to study as a second foreign language.

  • French
  • German
  • Spanish

The Faculty of Languages, MSA University is pleased to launch its first international conference “Translating Cultures: Theory and Practice” in October 2019. The conference aims to highlight the role of cultures and/or cultures in translation in enlightening people and transmitting diverse values, narratives and histories. This enlightenment contributes to a level of understanding that leads to appreciation, tolerance, acceptance and inter/cross-cultural communication.

 

  • Mini Conferences and Staff Development Workshops between Languages MSA and the University of Bedfordshire

The Faculty of Languages-MSA University hosts Mini–Conferences in collaboration with its academic partner, the University of Bedfordshire (UK). These academic events, “Sharing Experiences” aim to provide staff of both parties with the opportunity to present and share views and current research work that inspire scholars.

MSA University - ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR FACULTY OF Languages .

Conditions Required for Each Certificate:

Thanaweya Amma:

  • Scientific Sections (Science & Math Branches).
  • Art Section.

IGCSE & GCSE:

 

1- The Total number of subjects to be calculated are (8) different subjects as follows:

  • English Language or Literature is a MUST.
  • Second Foreign Language (French, Deutsch , Latin, …… etc.)
  • In addition to (6) subjects from the list of subjects approved by the Egyptian Ministry for Higher Education

2- Passing grade for (OL) subjects is "C"

3- Passing grade for (AL or ASL) is "D"

4- Accepted scores must be taken during not more than (4) successive years with no maximum number of IGCSE sittings.

American Diploma:

 

1- The Total number of subjects to be calculated are (8) different subjects as follows:

  • English Language or Literature is a MUST.
  • Second Foreign Language (French, Deutsch , Latin, …… etc.)
  • In addition to (6) subjects from the list of subjects approved by the Egyptian Ministry for Higher Education

2- At least (4) subjects from Grade 12 + Maximum of (2) subjects from Grade 10.

3- The passing grade for SAT 1 or EST 1 is 800 while ACT I the passing grade is 820.

4- Each requested subject MUST be at least (1) credit.

 

Important Note: The rules regarding the validity and the accepted dates for SAT / ACT or EST are set and will be announced by the Ministry of Higher Education in Egypt.

N.B : The passing grade for SAT2/EST2/ACT2 is 900

Canadian:

 

1- The Total number of subjects to be calculated are (8) different subjects as follows:

  • English Language or Literature is a MUST.
  • Second Foreign Language (French, Deutsch , Latin, …… etc.)
  • In addition to (6) subjects from the list of subjects approved by the Egyptian Ministry for Higher Education

2- At least (5) subjects from Grade 12 +Maximum of (3) subjects from Grade 11.

3- Subjects with less than one credit are not accepted.

IB:

1- The Total number of subjects to be calculated are (8) different subjects as follows:

  • English Language or Literature is a MUST.
  • Second Foreign Language (French, Deutsch , Latin, …… etc.)
  • + (4) subjects from the list of subjects approved by the Egyptian Ministry for Higher Education

2- The student MUST study (3) subjects at least on the higher level + (3) on the standard level

3- In addition to studying Theory of Knowledge & Extended Essay

4- Passing score is 24/45

Abitur:

 

1- The Total number of subjects to be calculated are (8) different subjects as follows:

  • English Language or Literature is a MUST.
  • Second Foreign Language (French, Deutsch , Latin, …… etc.)
  • In addition (5) different subjects from the list of subjects approved by the Egyptian Ministry for Higher Education.

2- ONLY (1) subject can be calculated from Grade 10 if (Biology - Chemistry - Physics).

French Baccalauréat:

1. The total number of subjects to be calculated are (7)

2. Passing mark is (10)

3. French Oral & French Écrit are calculated as one subject

4. Série Littéraire (L)/ Sciences Économiques et Sociales (ES)/ Série Scientifique (S) Are qualified to join the Faculty of Languages .

* Other foreign certificates including certificates from Arab countries are evaluated at the Admission Office in accordance to the regulations set by the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education.

Congratulations on your choice of the Faculty of Languages, MSA, and a hearty welcome to the only Faculty of its kind in Egypt that awards a British BA certificate along with the Egyptian one. The Faculty of Languages has started a British partnership with the University of Bedfordshire in England in 2014. Ever since our partnership started our criteria and delivery have been aligned to the British system of education.Our welcome is extended to continuing students at the Faculty in years 2, 3 and our senior class students too.

 

Working closely with you in classrooms, language labs or providing extra support outside classrooms contributes to your knowledge, development and awareness by the time you graduate. The carefully selected team of staff members is fully aware of the changing dynamics of the job market that determine the regular development of strategies and services offered to you in one of the four offered majors, Translation, Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), Executive Business Skills and Comparative Studies.

MSA University - Faculty of languages

The Faculty of Languages is validated by Bedfordshire University in England. The certificate awarded by the Ministry of Higher Education to the graduate of the Faculty of Languages is equivalent to the certificate awarded by Faculties of Alsun in Egypt. The Faculty of Languages is therefore a distinguished faculty as it is the first of its kind that provides its students with two certificates, British and Egyptian. It is set up with a view to meet the demands dictated by a fast changing world heading towards globalization. In such a world characterized by an ever increasing body of information and fast communication, the need arises for catching up with up-to-date information, understanding global culture and at the same time preserving a national identity. The Faculty of Languages offers four separate programmes, namely BA (Hons) Translation, BA (Hons) Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), BA (Hons) Executive Skills, and BA (Hons) Comparative Studies. The main aim of the faculty is to help students acquire deep knowledge and understanding of major concepts and acquire critical thinking and professional skills in the fields of English Language Studies; and to prepare them to become effective and dynamic in job markets. Certificates/ Bachelor Degrees Awarded by Bedfordshire University to Graduates of the Faculty of Languages

1- BA (Hons) in English Language Studies (Translation):

This programme offers extensive training in written, consecutive and simultaneous translation. Graduates of this programme will be fully qualified and capable of handling the transfer of knowledge and information from one language to another.

2- BA (Hons) in English Language Studies (Executive Skills):

This programme aims at offering extensive training in managerial fields. Graduates of this programme will acquire knowledge and skills in the field of human resources management, business administration and organizational behaviour. It provides students with a set of practical skills that render them fully prepared for employment upon graduation.

3- BA (Hons) in English Language Studies in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL):

This programme aims at qualifying students for a teaching career in national and international institutions. Students aiming at a teaching career are offered the most up-to-date teaching methods and approaches. Besides teaching methodology courses, students are also trained in various methods of testing and evaluation and the latest trends in the field of teaching ESP.

4- BA (Hons) in English Language Studies (Comparative Studies):

This programme aims at offering extensive training in the field of comparative studies (World literature, Cinema and Theatre). It prepares students to be qualified, knowledgeable and skilled in the field of cultural and artistic professions such as content and script writing in the world of media, cinema and performative arts.
